Building Programs of/for the Future
As the future of work and our world evolve rapidly, building degree programs that prepare students for emerging challenges and opportunities requires a forward-thinking strategy and pulling the right levers. Focusing your leadership and energy on anticipating the future, designing student-centered programs, and embracing continuous innovation will help determine which strategic levers you should engage.
1. Anticipate Future Market Needs
To create relevant degree programs, look beyond current trends and anticipate the skills and knowledge students will need in the future.
A few ways to do this are:
- Regularly engage in futuristic thinking and analysis to identify potential trends and challenges brought on through evolving technologies.
- Form advisory boards with representatives from emerging industries to provide insights into future skills and knowledge students need for future success.
- Develop courses that focus on emerging technologies, global challenges, and future-focused industries such as AI. Update these courses regularly as the content changes.
2. Design Flexible, Student-Centered Programs
In higher education, we are about to welcome our first incoming class of Generation Alpha (Fall 2028). Future degree programs must be adaptable to meet the diverse needs of new-generation learners, meaning we cannot continue doing things the way we always have.
We need to think about:
- Creating modular and customizable programs that allow students to create their own learning paths. This flexibility enables students to focus on specific areas of interest and adapt their education to changing career goals.
- Introducing micro-credentials that students can earn alongside their degree. These credentials demonstrate mastery of specific skills that are immediately applicable in the workforce.
- Developing targeted support services for non-traditional and lifelong learning students. Future students will engage with technology and work in jobs that do not currently exist. These support services need to be flexible in delivery and engagement.
3. Embrace Continuous Innovation
The pace of change in higher education will only accelerate, requiring institutions to adopt a mindset of continuous innovation.
Academic leaders must view every program and degree as being in a constant state of beta testing. Two ways to do that are:
- Implement processes for regularly reviewing and updating curricula to ensure they are up to date with the latest industry trends, technologies, and pedagogical advancements.
- Integrate new educational technologies to enhance the learning experience and keep students engaged.
Academic leaders must not be afraid to develop programs that address unknown futures. To develop creative and future-focused degree programs, academic leaders must determine which levers to pull (strategy) that anticipate market shifts, prioritize student flexibility, and embrace innovation. By implementing these tactics, institutions can develop programs that equip students with the skills and adaptability needed to thrive in an uncertain and rapidly evolving world.
